IGREA Gains Backing from Unlikely Congressman PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 31 October 2007

American politician Barney Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) has received support from the 40th member of the House of Representatives to date, Virginia’s Democratic James Moran. While Frank’s camp is pleased with every new congressman that supports the act, what is strange about this backing is that Moran was an ardent supporter of anti-online gambling legislation, including last year’s earth shattering Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Moran is serving his ninth term in office.

Barney Frank’s IGREA proposal would serve to counter the UIGEA act signed into law by President George Bush. Instead of banning online gambling outright, the IGREA is meant to legalize this pastime within a restricted and regulated framework. Frank hopes that the new law will allow authorities to deal with problematic issues connected to internet gambling such as underage wagering and money laundering, while still allowing the American economy to enjoy the fruits of taxation and foreign investment. It is hoped that Moran’s vote will encourage more congressmen to give their support to Frank’s efforts.
