The head of the Poker Player’s Association, Alfonse D’Amato is optimistic about the future of online poker in the United States and has stated that the industry may be legalized as early as 2009. During the Global Gaming Expo, which took place in Las Vegas early this week, D’Amato said that internal and external pressure on the United States would eventually be effective in bringing changes to the present anti-gambling legislation.
D’Amato was referring to the sanctions that are pending against the United States by the World Trade Organization that could run into billions of dollars. Several countries around the globe have joined a growing list of those seeking compensation for the US’s unfair monopoly on its gambling industry. It is felt that if sanctions begin to affect non-gaming industries within the United States, mounting pressure from trade unions and industry leaders will eventually cause lawmakers to begin taking the necessary steps to legalize parts of the gambling world, with online poker probably being the first to be affected by reforms. |
