EU Trade Commissioner Speaks out on US Online Gambling Laws PDF Print E-mail

Peter Mandelson, Trade Commissioner on behalf of the European Union, visited the United States last week to press claims regarding US defiance of signed regional World Trade Organization treaties. After returning from his trip, Mandelson commented on the expected problems that he foresees for the US economy if the country does not start regulating its online gambling industry. “What we really need is for the legislation to be put right and for foreign operators to stop being excluded and discriminated against in the way the present US legislation does,” Mandelson said. Mandelson was echoing the sentiments felt across the board regarding the US’s stance on the issue. Most feel that the US economy may not be able to withstand the pressure of having to pay out literally billions of dollars in compensation to a long line of complainants. On the other hand, everyone agrees that a well-regulated online gambling industry will benefit the entire country, from the protection of gamblers to the billions in revenue that the state coffers will make from taxation.
