Virginia Congressman Bob Goodlatte, the mastermind behind the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, has apparently been handed $40,000 in lobbying money by the horse racing industry. Goodlatte has always contended that his motives for pushing the UIGEA into law were based on the ‘immorality’ of wagering.
Many industry experts, however, fail to understand how Goodlatte could be so passionate about barring online gambling based on his moral beliefs, yet leave a major loophole in the law which essentially allows fantasy sports, state lotteries and horse racing industries to exist. This latest acceptance of lobbying funds by Goodlatte, as reported by J.Todd on his “Weekly Perspectives”, is one more example of why UIGEA opponents feel that the law is two-faced, serving the interests of some industries and ignoring the needs of others. In recent months there have been more and more calls from unexpected camps for the US government to legalize and regulate the online gambling industry once and for all. |
