Turkey Cracks Down on Online Poker PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 20 December 2007

The Turkish government is following the trend of the United States and Norway and has decided to take stronger action against online poker sites and players. The Turkish law enforcement agencies have reportedly compiled a list of over 3500 people who are involved in playing online poker and the question remains what the authorities plan to do with this information.

In a new bid to crack down on playing online poker, culprits will be fined 100 New Turkey Lira (about $85). While on an individual level, this might not sound like a lot of money, this fine actually is applied to every single game played. The combined number of games played from the list of 3500 players, is said to stand on over 46,000.

Turkey is not as anti-online gaming as other countries and actually has its own partially state owned gambling company IDDAA. This company is the only legal option for Turkish residents to play online games - many have criticized the country’s crack-down on online poker and the like as an attempt to boost the state-own company at the expense of the other private players in the market.
