Despite the fact that wagering online is not strictly legal in Greece, the number of gamblers in this country has tripled in the last three years, according to interesting information released by the National Federation of Bookmakers. Last year alone, Greeks gambled almost $23-billion, $10-billion of which was earmarked for the online market. In 2002, following a national scandal that revealed illegal gambling activity by game arcade owners, the Greek government cracked down on its wagering laws and banned all electronic games that involved betting in one way or another. Since then, many lawsuits have been brought against the government, some of which claim that the ban directly contravenes European Union laws of free trade. Internet gambling remains big news in the country, with the majority of players citing that their reason for playing online was to improve their financial situation. In the last few days of 2007, and the first few in 2008, over 200,000 Greeks visited the nine land casinos dotted around the country.
