US Amnesty for Online Gambling Operators? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 January 2008

Online casino executives who, up until now, have been hesitant to travel to and from the United States because of their involvement in the gambling industry may soon be able to move freely, thanks to efforts by the Antigua and Barbuda government. The Caribbean state has announced that it is involved in negotiations with the United States regarding the granting of amnesty to online casino executives in the future.

Following a series of high-profile arrests of casino directors in recent years by US authorities for violating the country’s 1982 Wire Act, operators residing in Antigua have avoided traveling to the United States, even if just to transition between flights taking them on to different countries. In a landmark decision by the World Trade Organization, the United States was found guilty of violating its regional trade agreements by stopping Antigua-based internet casinos from operating within the US market, and was ordered to pay the Caribbean country compensation. It is believed that the current amnesty negotiations are part of a move to regulate the relationship between the two countries.
