The US National Basketball Association paid a consulting company more than $300,000 last year in order to lobby Congress on issues surrounding sportsbetting and internet gambling. It was reported that McGuirewoods Consulting got paid out a total of $330,000 in total in 2007, with $280,000 of that amount paid in the second half of the year alone. The NBA lobbied Congress to preserve the legislation that prohibits players from gambling on sports, as well as to “strengthen the prohibition against internet gambling”. Since 2006, when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was signed, the United States has entered into a phase of near Prohibition, making it increasingly difficult for online gamblers to wager at sportsbetting and casino sites, and receive any winnings. In recent months there has been a significant move by several US politicians to pass legislation that would regulate the online casino industry instead of banning it outright.
