Eliot Spitzer, who holds the post of Governor of New York, has been forced to resign, following the announcement that he was directly involved in a prostitution ring. Spitzer, who for many years acted as attorney general for the state, fought hard against internet fraud, white-collar crime and other types of crime, including prostitution. However, Spitzer was best known for his virulent stand against online gambling and, as attorney general, he led a number of significant campaigns against the industry. In 2002, his actions against financial institutions led Citibank to initiate an agreement with the AG office that it would no longer process transactions with online casinos and internet gambling operations. After the deal was made, Spitzer said in an announcement: "Americans now waste $4 billion a year on this pernicious form of gambling. With this agreement, we will cut off an unlimited line of credit that was a jackpot for illegal offshore casinos."
