Swedish Poker Report Shows Influence of Foreign Sites on Problem Gambling PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 11 April 2008

A report commissioned by the Swedish government to examine online poker play in the country, revealed that players who sought out foreign poker sites only, were more prone to addictive behavior than those who played exclusively at the state-run site, Svenska Spel.

All in all, a total of 200,000 Swedish players regularly sought their poker fun online. Out of these, 27.5% played only at Svenska Spel, 47.5% played only at other sites, and the rest played at both. The report showed that 11% those players who were loyal to Svenska Spel eventually developed some form of addiction to gambling, while nearly double that number became addicts when they played only at foreign poker sites.

Svenska Spel’s license to operate the only official poker site in the industry will be renewed in June 2008. The renewal was pending the results of the industry report.
