The government in The Netherlands has come down hard on football clubs in the country after discovering that some stadiums featured sports betting advertisements over the weekend. Specifically, authorities ordered stadiums in Feyenoord and Zwolle to halt all matches, until they removed an advertisement for Unibet online sports betting operator. A spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Justice, Ivo Hommes said about the situation: “Gaming companies without a license cannot offer their services in the Netherlands, nor can they advertise. We therefore requested the Feyenoord and FC Zwolle soccer teams to remove the billboards. They are breaking the law.” A letter of complaint has also been sent to Unibet regarding the matter, although this is not the first time that the company has been reprimanded by the authorities for illegal advertising. “They are very much aware of the fact that they are breaking the Dutch law,” said Hommes.
