The global gambling group, Ladbrokes has spoken out against the recent report issued by the Swedish National Gambling Consultation, which recommended leaving online poker and casino gaming in the hands of the monopoly, Svenska Spel in order to control problem gambling. Ladbrokes called the decision “protectionist” and said that the report only bought time for the Swedish government to ward off pressure put on it by the European Commission towards its gambling policy.

“This is a last ditch attempt to avoid a referral to the European Court of Justice for Sweden's protectionist and unfair betting and gaming laws and yet, even now, the report seeks to extend the reach of the monopoly to cover online gaming including poker and bingo, and further enshrines protection in land based lotteries, slot machines, casinos and horse racing,” said the Managing Director of Remote Betting and Gaming for Ladbrokes, John O'Reilly.
