Australia may see some changes in its gambling laws if the AFL has its way. The group has asked the government to consider changing the Interactive Gambling Act that prohibits in-betting during live games. The AFL believes that since in-betting is allowed telephonically, it should also be allowed over the internet. In a submission to the government, the Australian Football League said that the Oz laws should be overhauled to be brought in line with legislation that allows in-betting in countries such as England.

“In-play betting is extremely popular worldwide as a form of gambling, and if consumers are not able to access it online in Australia, they might elsewhere with overseas operators. It seems inconsistent that a consumer can bet 'in-play' via telephone but not online,” said the AFL. "Specifically, the AFL would like to suggest amendments to the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, such that betting online during sports events, or after an event has commenced, is no longer prohibited."
