Sic Bo PDF Print E-mail
Sic bo, meaning dice pair, is an ancient Chinese gambling game originally popular in Asian casinos. Today it is played in most casinos all over the world. In the original version of the game three dice were shaken on a plate under a bowl. The bowl was then lifted to reveal the numbers. Today the dice are shaken mechanically and the numbers fed into a computer, which lights up the winning areas on the sic bo table. Various combinations of the outcomes of the dice are marked on the table. A player places his wagers on the marked spaces.

There are a large number of bets available. The most common bets are the “big” and the “small”. The big wins when the total of the three dice rolled is between 11 and 17, both numbers included, except if triples are rolled. That is three fours and three fives though totaling within the specified range do not win. The big is paid out at 1:1. The small wins when the total of the three dice rolled is between 4 and 10, both numbers included, except if triples are rolled. That is three twos and three threes though totaling within the specified range do not win. The big is paid out at 1:1. Another combination of bets is the “odd” and “even” bet”. These bets win if the total score is odd and even respectively. Again triples are excluded. These bets are also paid out at 1:1. Triples have been excluded from these bets because there are special bets for triples. A bet on a specific named triple is paid out at 180:1 if the named triple is rolled. Players can also bet on any triple being rolled. These bets are paid out at 30:1. There is a bet on specific named doubles. If the player bets on a five double he will win if any two of the three dice show a five. This bet is paid out at 10:1. The players can bet on specific totals as well. The payout varies inversely as the probability of obtaining that total. The most common totals are 10 and 11 and are paid out at 6:1. The least common totals are 4 and 17 and are paid out at 60:1.

There are many less common bets, which may not be found in all casinos. Some of them are listed below. Two of the three dice show a named combination; a specific number will appear on any three of the dice; any three of stated four numbers will appear on the dice; the dice will show a specified three number combination; the dice will show a combination of a specified double and a single number.

Sic bo is played under different names in different places. In England the game is known as “grand hazard”. The dice roll down a chute containing obstructions so that they are randomized as they fall. “Chuck a luck” is a variation of sic bo played in the United States.
