After nearly three and half years under house arrest, David Carruthers, former Chief Executive Officer of Bet on Sports, faced sentencing in a St Louis court last week. Judge Carol Jackson gave Carruthers 33 months in prison for his part in running Bet on Sports, an operation that was grossing $1.25 billion at its peak. Carruthers was arrested several years ago and finally reached a plea bargain with the Department of Justice where he admitted to one count of racketeering conspiracy in exchange for having all the other charges dropped against him. The UK born Carruthers was hopeful that his sentence would be more lenient, considering the plea bargain and the fact that he has already served many years under house arrest, however Judge Jackson stated that she did not believe Carruthers when he said that he only came to realize that he was breaking US gambling laws later into his role as CEO.
