The wheel of fortune comes in many variations. The most common variation is also known as “money wheel”. It has a wheel that is six feet in diameter, stands vertically and rotates about a central horizontal axis. There are 54 segments on the wheel, each containing one of the following symbols: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20 and a joker. 24 segments display $1, 15 segments display $2, 7 segments display $5, 4 segments display $10, 2 segments display $20 and 2 segments display the joker. This gives different symbols different probabilities of being selected and adds interest to the game. The dealer’s table is marked with the same symbols. The players place their bets on the symbol selected by them. They can also place bets on multiple symbols but each bet is treated independently. After the bets are placed the dealer spins the wheel of fortune. The segments are separated by spokes. There is a pointer mounted on a flexible rubber piece, which rubs against the spokes and slows the wheel down. When the wheel stops the pointer indicates the winning symbol. The payouts are as follows. $1 is paid out at 1:1, $2 is paid out at 2:1, $5 is paid out at 5:1, $10 is paid out at 10:1, $20 is paid out at 20:1 and the joker is paid out.
Another common variation of the wheel of fortune is dice wheel. In this variation the 54 segments have combinations of three dice faces on them. The six triples appear four times each. Each of the six following doubles appears four times each: 2-1-1, 2-2-1, 4-3-3, 5-4-4, 6-5-5 and 6-6-3. The remaining six combinations are made up by 3-2-1 appearing thrice and 6-5-4 appearing thrice. These combinations are not arbitrarily chosen. Each of the numbers from 1 to 6 appears in exactly seven of the combinations. Each of the numbers from 1 to 6 appears as a double in exactly four of the combinations. Each of the numbers from 1 to 6 appears as a triple in exactly four of the combinations. The players place their wagers on the numbers and are paid out in accordance with a pre-determined payout schedule. The schedule varies from casino to casino. A third variant, popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, has the wheel divided into 52 segments and uses the letters A to G as the symbols. A and B appear once each and are paid out at 50:1. A and B appear once each and are paid out at 50:1. C appears twice and is paid out at 20:1. D appears four times and is paid out at 10:1. E appears eight times and is paid out at 5:1. F appears twelve times and is paid out at 3:1. G appears twenty-four times and is paid out at 1:1. Another variant, known as Mississippi Derby” simulates a horse race. The horses are placed in three concentric rings to denote “win” “place” and “show”. The betting system is also similar to horse-racing. |
