United States Makes Inadequate Counter Offers to EU and Antigua PDF Print E-mail

The European Union is mulling the counter offer made to it by the United States in response to a compensation claim through the World Trade Organization over loss of income. The EU joined Antigua and Barbuda, as well as several other countries, in a multi-billion dollar claim, stating that the United States' unfair internet gambling laws led to them losing business opportunities and thus billions of dollars in revenue. It is felt however, that the offer, which includes storage and warehouse services, is unsatisfactory and the EU may reject it. The EU has until October 22 to review the offer.

The offer made to Antigua – the tiny Caribbean country that notched an impressive victory in this David-and-Goliath-like saga when it won its case against the United States through the WTO – has also been seen as highly inadequate. While Antigua is claiming $3.4-billion in compensation, the United States has counter offered with a sum of just $500,000. Antigua has threatened to take serious measures, such as revoking trademarks and IP agreements between the two countries, if the United States does not begin taking the issue more seriously.
