A US judge has denied the founder of the online gambling company, Bet on Sports, Gary Kaplan an appeal for bail after a request was put in by the accused on the basis of health reasons. Kaplan was arrested last year in the Dominican Republic after he fled from the United States over impending charges of running an illegal internet wagering business. The arrest was made around the same time that Bet on Sport’s CEO, David Carruthers was arrested for the same reasons in Dallas.
In his request for bail, Kaplan suggested that he wear an electronic monitoring bracelet instead and agreed to fund a security service to guard him, however the district judge, Carol Jackson, denied his request and stated in her ruling that no conditions of release could assure Jackson’s appearance in court. Kaplan, Carruthers (who remains under house arrest in St. Louis), and eleven other defendants have all pleaded not guilty to charges brought against them. In a plea bargain reached with US authorities this year, Bet on Sports has agreed to work with authorities to bring evidence against those charged. |
