Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment launched its interactive division last week, after the casino operator’s home state, Connecticut, legalized online gaming and sports betting.
According to the company’s statement, the new Mohegan Digital division is ready to offer customers the latest digital gaming solution, helping the renowned operator further grow its business. That way, it should meet the needs of a new global audience of players.
A Fantastic Growth Opportunity
Under the provisions of the agreement the Mohegans and the Mashantucket Pequots signed with Governor Lamont back in March, the Constitution State’s two tribes will be able to offer its services to their customers for a minimum of ten years. The offering of the two federally recognized tribes will include online casino gaming and sports betting.
The tribes will pay an 18% tax on their revenues from online casinos in the first five years, while the tax will be 20% for the next five years. The sports betting tax will be 13.75% on all bets for the entire ten-year period.
Two months ago, the state’s Legislature approved a bill to make online casinos and sports betting legal. It was then sent to Governor Lamont, who signed it into law a couple of days later. The new piece of legislation went into force on July 1.
However, sports betting and online gaming won’t be launched immediately, as the deal struck between Governor Lamont and the tribes still requires the approval of federal authorities. At this moment, it is being reviewed by the Department of the Interior, while the whole process should be completed in a couple of months.
A Perfect Timing
Mohegan pointed out that its new digital arm planned to offer its customers a playing experience for its Mohegan Sun Connecticut. The group has recently appointed new executives to oversee the new business venture. Rich Roberts was named as President, while Aviram Alroy will serve as Vice President.
Commenting on the launch of the casino operator’s new interactive arm, Ray Pineault, President and Chief Executive Officer at Mohegan, said the operator had been experiencing strong growth in digital vertical across its properties over the last twelve months. He explained that the current expansion of legal sports betting across the States represented the perfect moment to launch Mohegan Digital.
Pineault also said that Mohegan had made critical technological advancements in the digital segment over the years, while the experience of working with some of the leading names in the industry would prove crucial in efforts to expand and elevate the experience. The executive added he was confident they would be able to provide an unparalleled quality of digital entertainment to their customers.
Mohegan opened its first casino in Nevada earlier this year. It also inked a partnership deal with Virgin Hotels, a business owned by the British businessman Richard Branson. Under the provisions of that agreement, the casino operator is now tasked with running the operators at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, which was opened in March this year.
